Project results

The proposed Business Plan leverages innovative technologies in electronics, automation, and ICT, modernizing the applied farming practices. It reduces the use of agrochemicals while simultaneously providing effective and efficient protection for olive oil production and the environment, achieving the following:

  1. The modernization of IPM (Integrated Pest Management) practices
  2. More effective management of olive fruit fly
  3. The adoption of modern practices in sustainable, environmentally friendly agriculture and precision farming instead of destructive blanket spraying
  4. The training of individuals involved in pest control in the use of ICT and proper agricultural practices, modernizing the National Pest Control Program (NPCP).

The more effective management of pests in the olive groves of the Agricultural Cooperative of Stavies is expected to result in an annual increase in production of approximately 5%. Furthermore, an improvement in quality is expected through the upgraded sensory characteristics of the olive oil, which will be proven to be free from pesticide residues through relevant analyses. The implementation of the project will contribute to establishing a strong ‘brand name’ for the cooperative, producing olive oil of high nutritional and commercial value. The overall economic benefits, approximately 10%, resulting from the quantitative and qualitative improvements, will recoup the cost of the project in just 2 years. The economic benefit is amplified by expanding the olive oil production from 250 tons in the Cooperative to 70,000 tons (at the regional level of Crete) and/or to 260,000 tons (at the national level).
